Traveling with a Gluten Intolerance

Hi everyone! I hope you all have had a great week. This week is going to be a little different style for my blog. I am currently in Copenhagen, Denmark and thought I would talk about my experiences when it comes to being gluten intolerant and eating a gluten free diet in a foreign country.

I will be honest, it has not been the most easy week for me when it comes to finding food that is safe for me. I haven’t been able to go into the first restaurant I see when I am hungry. I have had to do extensive research to make sure a restaurant can cater to my dietary needs. I have also found that many of the restaurants that offer gluten free options are over a 40 minute walk from the hotel I am staying at. This can be inconvenient since the culture here is to walk or cycle to most places. Copenhagen does have a Metro system but it can be confusing to figure it out if you aren’t used to it.

I have also found that some of the workers don’t completely understand what gluten free is due to the language barrier but they definitely try their best, which is greatly appreciated. Most restaurants will do modifications so I am able to get a food item gluten free that would not normally be.

I have also found myself sad because my friends will get different pastries and they look and smell so good and I can’t try them as the cafe’s rarely have gluten free versions. Again there are a few bakeries and cafes that sell gluten free good but they are a far distance to travel on foot from the hotel.

I will say my new go to breakfast while I have been here is what is shown in the picture. It is a “Green Bowl.” The green bowl is a green smoothie bowl with lots of fruit and vegetables. It is topped with blueberries, fresh apple, whole nut granola, and almond butter. It is delicious! I am very happy to have found a safe food that is located only about 7 min walking distance from the hotel.

Do you have any tips for traveling abroad when you have dietary restrictions? Let me know in the comments!

  1. I'm so glad we have been able to find so many other options and alternatives for you! I also got an Açaí bowl for breakfast at the same place and it was delicious! 10/10 recommend!

  2. I am happy that people have been so accommodating to your needs. It's very brave of you to go out and eat food from a chef that has potentially never made a gluten-free meal before.
